NEW 4 KM LENGTH TUNNEL

The meeting of the Trilateral Coordinating Council about implementation of Baku-Tbilisi-Kars Railway Line Project was held in Baku. The delegation of the Ministry of Regional Development and Infrastructure of Georgia participated in the meeting together with the delegations of Turkey and Azerbaijan.

The Council discussed the Baku - Tbilisi - Kars railway line construction - rehabilitation process, both on Georgian and Turkish area. The protocol was signed at the meeting of Coordination Council and it was decided to hold next meeting with the participation of three countries, in September in Georgia.

The construction of 4km long railway section of tunnel will begin on Marabda-Kartsakhi section on Georgian-Turkish Border in few weeks. 42 million USD will be spent on construction of the tunnel which will connect railway sections of Georgia and Turkey. After finishing tunnels construction of the tunnel cargo movement will be more convinient.

4000 people are employed on the construction-rehabilitation works of railway line. After finishing the construction of the railway station of Akhalkalakhi, 1600 people will be employed on the object.

Rehabilitation- construction project of "Baku-Tbiisi-Kars railway line" has highest importance for Georgia, Azerbaijan and Turkey is very important. The new railway line will help to increase cargo movement and will support of fast transportation of freight from Asia to the Europe.

The rehabilitation project of Baku-Tbilisi-Kars is being implemented on three stages. The first stage, rehabilitation of Marabda-Tetritskaro railway line (with general length 29 km) has been already completed. Rehabilitation works of railway stations: Marabda, Tsintskaro and Tetritskaro and its supporting buildings are finished, 50 artificial buildings are reconstructed; two new railway bridges are constructed, damaged wooden sleepers have been replaced with concrete sleepers, new international standards railway track has been paved. Rehabilitation of Tetritskaro-Akhalkalakhi railway line and construction of 25 km length new railway line on Akhalkalaki-Kartsakhi section is underway in order to put the first test train into operation from Marabda to Kartsakhi through the territory of Georgia at the end of this year.
