Tuesday, July 24
The River Mtkvari begins in Turkey and runs through Georgia and eventually flows into the Caspian Sea in Azerbaijan. The Turkish side together with Azeri officials initiated the idea of the creation of a union of Mtkvari River countries. Presumably Georgia will also join the organization. The governor of the Turkish province Ardagan stated that the initiative is supported by the Turkish president. According to him, this project, like the Baku-Tbilisi-Kars railway project, will further unite these three countries making this unit stronger. Concerning the possibility of Armenia joining this organization, the Azeri side thinks that this could become possible only after Armenia frees the occupied Azeri territories. The Turkish side also stated that any kind of serious projects envisaged and implemented within the basin of this river should be decided by a consensus.
