The United National Movement (UNM) will return to government, UNM member Giorgi Vashadze said at the UNM conference on December 23, adding that the UNM now starts a new life. Vashadze said that the October 1 parlaiemntary election was a good lesson for the team. “Today we start living with the reality we all faced together after October 1,” he said at Expo-Georgia.

The UNM plans to be closer to the people, listen to them and offer the governmet a path to development. Vashadze said that the UNM will be an opposition that will offer effective steps to every state official. “It will be a constructive opposition and will not let anyone lie to the people,” he said.

According to Vashadze, nine years of UNM’s government were important for Georgia as it was rediscovered on the world map.

Georgian President Mikheil Saakashvili also addressed the UNM members of parlaiement and council. Talking of the importance of Georgia’s development, its European future and north-atlantic integration, Saakashvili said the main value for the UNM is equality, tolerance, multi ethnicity, religious diversity, transparency, secutity and the supremacy of law.

Ukrainian politician and former boxer, Vitali Klichko, attended the meeting as a special guest. His party, the Ukrainian Democratic Aliance for Reform (UDAR) and the UNM signed an agreement on cooperation.

Klichkko said Georgia has given an important example on how a post-Soviet country could overcome crime and carry out reforms.

Calling the UNM the most patriotic party in Georgia, President Saakashvili said the UNM will put Georgia on the path of Euro-Atlantic modernization. “We reject everything that hinders our independence and path to the EU and NATO,” Saakashvili said, adding that it is not enough for the new government to talk about their aspirations.
