Compensation for Families of Fallen Soldiers

Thursday, December 19
Families of military servicemen killed in action defending Georgia’s territorial integrity, liberty and independence, in international operations and during other peacekeeping missions, will receive monthly compensation of amounts of up to 500 GEL from the New Year. The changes in the law “About State Compensation and State Academy Scholarship” will come into force January 1, 2014.

According to the changes, family members of military servicemen killed in international operations or while performing peacekeeping missions, as well as those families whose members died during the May 1998 and August 2008 War or as a result of injuries suffered during these operations will also get reimbursement.

The meeting was held at the Ministry of Labor, Health and Social Affairs. Deputy Defence Minister Tamar Karosanidze and Deputy Minister of Health, Labor and Social Affairs Davit Lomidze provided explanations about the assistance to the families of the fallen military servicemen.

They provided concrete information regarding to whom the changes made in the law are aimed at. Compensation will be allocated to the following family members of the deceased military by proportional rule: parents, spouse, children under 18, as well as disabled children.

“This is one of the most important initiatives. Family members of deceased military servicemen will receive 500 GEL and after 2015 - 1,000 GEL compensation each month. The Veterans Affairs Department is registering these families. Currently, their number amounts to more than 2,500. They have to register at social agencies in order to receive compensations starting at the New Year,” outlined Tamar Karosanidze.

The citizens who belong to the above categories should apply using the necessary documents to the social service agencies according to their place of registration.
