Major-General Vakhtang Kapanadze in Kandahar

Chief of General Staff of the Georgian Armed Forces is paying a visit to Afghanistan. Major-General Vakhtang Kapanadze visited the Special Mountain Battalion on the Air Base in Kandahar Province accompanied by the Commander of Special Operation Forces, LTC Dimitri Kiknadze. The Commander of the Mountain Battalion, Major Ilia Tikurishvili delivered information on the existing situation to members of the delegation.

Afterward, the Major-General and the commander of the Special Operation Forces held a meeting with the Commander of Regional Command South, Major-General Paul J. LaCamera. The sides discussed the details of the duties the Georgian military are carrying out in their operational area within the ISAF mission. The Special Mountain Battalion has been participating in the international mission in Afghanistan for already a month. Their main task is to maintain the security of the base, patrol and provide peace in their operational area together with the coalition forces.

Major-General Vakhtang Kapanadze also took a tour in the forward operating Air Base, Pasab, accompanied by the members of the delegation. The Reinforced Company of the Special Mountain Battalion provides security in and out of the base and patrol in the forward operating base.

The Special Mountain Battalion of the Georgian Armed Forces is the first Georgian military unit which fulfills its mission under the U.S. contingent on the Air Base in Kandahar Province within the ISAF international mission.
