Bartok Reflections

By Mariam Chanishvili
Monday, November 28
“Bartok Reflections” is a joint concert held in V. Sarajishvili Tbilisi State Conservatoire, performed by the student from Franz Liszt Academy of Music in Budapest and Tbilisi State Conservatoire.

Georgian and Hungarian composition students created contemporary pieces in the spirit of one of Bartok’s emblematic works each. The only requirement for the students was to apply the same instrumentation as used by Bartók.

This exceptional experience for the students includes the observation of the unique contemporary interpretations of the original pieces by the Georgian and Hungarian composers. The Liszt Academy brings 2 such compositions to Tbilisi, and 2 pieces are brought by the Sarajishvili State Conservatoire.

During the workshop, participating students of the two universities rehearsed the original Bartók and the complementary contemporary pieces together in mixed chamber.

At the end of the workshop, participants perform the pieces in a concert in the concert hall of the host institute.

The Bartok-reflections concert is all about showing how Bartók’s music resonates in recent contemporary reflections of young composers and musicians, also, drawing a picture of Bartók’s magical and meditative world.

Due to the shortness of time it was a great challenge for the students working together in the recently formed chamber ensembles.

The program is supported by the Hungarian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade and the Embassy of Hungary in Georgia under the International Bartók Year 2016.

Tbilisi State Conservatoire Contemporary Music Ensemble was founded in 2013 under the initiative of Reso Kiknadze (the rector of TSC, composer) and Nino Jvania (pianist, associated professor of TSC, artistic director of the ensemble since 2014). Members of the ensemble change annually. Thus, students of performing faculty - both instrumentalists, as well as singers - are given the opportunity, to get acquainted with the contemporary performance tendencies.
