PM Welcomes First Georgian Ozeki

Sumo wrestler Tochinoshin (Levan Gorgadze), who has recently been promoted to the sport's second-highest rank of ozeki, met with the Prime Minister of Georgia Giorgi Kvirikashvili at the governmental administration on June 6.

PM stated that Tochinoshin’s victory will act as a bridge between Georgian and Japanese people.

"Tochinoshin is the main representative of Georgia to Japan. Despite the long distance between Georgia and Japan, the two have a lot in common and the role of Tochinoshin in our relations is special.

“You can always count on us, just like we count on you,” the PM addressed the sportsmen after the meeting.

The Japan Sumo Association officially decided on the promotion of Gorgadze on May 30. The decision was officially confirmed to Tochinoshin and his master Kasugano at the ceremony.

Gorgadze is the third wrestler from Europe and the first from Georgia to reach the rank. The 2 other Ozeki-ranked wrestlers from Europe are Bulgarian-born Kotooshu and Estonian wrestler Baruto.
