Papuashvili Criticizes Brussels Over Leaked Report on Georgia
Georgian Dream Parliament Speaker Shalva Papuashvili has accused Brussels of leaking an official document and claimed that the information ended up in what he described as propaganda outlets.
"Firstly, let's pay attention to one detail. We all saw that Brussels is leaking. We saw that the document, which had been sent officially, somehow ended up in propaganda media," Papuashvili told journalists. He specifically criticized Radio Free Europe, saying, "Brussels turned its intelligence agency into its own propaganda media."
Papuashvili explained that the report, sent to the European Commission, outlines whether Georgia poses risks to the European Union in areas such as migration or crime. He insisted that Georgia's record is strong. "In this regard, Georgia is exemplary, including in terms of readmission, as Georgia acts in good faith," he said.
According to Radio Free Europe, Georgia's ambassador in Brussels, Vakhtang Makharoblishvili, sent a letter and report to the European Commission on August 31. The documents responded to a letter sent in July by the head of the Commission's Directorate-General for Migration and Home Affairs.
Radio Free Europe reported that the exchange included discussions on "ensuring the rule of law." The report's section on "External Relations and Fundamental Rights" described measures taken in 2025 to strengthen civil and political rights, freedom of expression, equality, inclusive development, public order, and the rule of law.
Kobakhidze Warns of 'Deep State' Influence in US and Europe
Irakli Kobakhidze has voiced concern about the" growing influence of the deep state" in both the United States and Europe. Speaking to journalists, he said that bureaucratic institutions on both sides of the Atlantic are facing serious challenges.
"The influences of the deep state all over the world are concerning. You can see the situation the European bureaucracy is in. There are grave tendencies in Europe. The same was happening in the US in the last four years," Kobakhidze said.
He expressed hope that institutions in the West would eventually prevail over these pressures. "We hope that the US will ultimately defeat the influences of the deep state. We hope the European bureaucracy will also defeat the influences of the deep state. We will see the rest. Let's wait for the development of events," he added.
Kobakhidze also criticized the Helsinki Commission, accusing it of being dominated by what he called representatives of the deep state. "You see that the representatives of the deep state are dominating in the Helsinki Commission. And they have summoned the agents of the deep state, Zourabichvili, Khidasheli. This is absolutely funny, of course," he said, referring to the 5th Georgian President Salome Zourabichvili and former Defense Minister Tina Khidasheli.
When asked if his government had lost hope of restoring relations with Western partners, Kobakhidze dismissed the suggestion. "Who told you this? We are optimistic. It is you, the National Movement, who has lost hope," Kobakhidze replied.
