Georgian NGOs Express Solidarity with German Ambassador Amid Attacks from Ruling Party

A broad coalition of Georgian non-governmental organizations has issued a joint statement expressing full solidarity with Ernst Peter Fischer, the Ambassador of Germany to Georgia, after he became the target of what they describe as "groundless, aggressive and unworthy attacks" from the ruling Georgian Dream party.
"We, representatives of Georgian non-governmental organizations, express our full solidarity with the Ambassador of the Federal Republic of Germany to Georgia, Mr. Ernst Peter Fischer - the attempt to discredit and personally attack a representative of an important partner country of Georgia, a guest of our homeland, is deeply disturbing," the statement reads.
According to the NGOs, the attacks stem from Ambassador Fischer's outspoken support for democratic values and Georgia's European future. "At a time when democratic values and Georgia's European future are under attack, Ambassador Fischer has consistently and courageously defended the principles of freedom, openness, and democracy," the statement says.
The groups argue that the ruling party's rhetoric is part of a broader campaign of hostility toward Western allies. "These personal insults and propaganda narratives are not isolated incidents; they are part of a deliberate and systematic campaign of disinformation and hostility directed not only against Germany, but also against other Western partners - including the European Union, the United Kingdom, and the United States," the NGOs note.
They warn that such actions damage Georgia's international reputation and weaken its strategic position. "Instead of strengthening Georgia's sovereignty, such narratives only weaken our resilience, incite division and serve the interests of those forces who do not want Georgia to succeed on its European path," the statement says.
The NGOs reaffirmed their support for Fischer and Western partners who "continue to defend the right of Georgians to freedom, democracy and European integration" despite political hostility.
The statement was signed by leading organizations including the Europe-Georgia Institute, Transparency International Georgia, Tbilisi Pride, the Democracy Research Institute, and the Georgian Young Lawyers Association. The letter remains open for further signatures.
