Enforcement police evicted dozens of families on Thursday from a residential building located on Tvalchrelidze Street in the "Africa" settlement on the outskirts of Tbilisi. The eviction operation, supported by the Ministry of Internal Affairs, began in the early morning and was met with resistance from residents.

According to Radio Liberty, 39 families had been living in the building permanently, though some had previously had their living spaces confiscated. The National Bureau of Enforcement stated that it had been assessing the social status and needs of the residents for the past year, starting from June 11, 2024.

"The work included psycho-emotional support for the residents and preparation for the process," the agency said. "It was explained in detail what the eviction process entails and what the possible consequences of refusing to comply with the court's decision might be."

Authorities say that families with official social status received offers from the Ministry of Health, while others were presented with one-time compensation or temporary housing support from the lender. The majority reportedly agreed to these terms. However, several families remain outside the building perimeter after refusing the proposed agreements.

During the eviction, police detained approximately 10 individuals. The Ministry of Internal Affairs has not yet provided details about those arrested. In such cases, law enforcement typically applies Article 173 of the Code of Administrative Offenses, which allows for the detention of individuals who disobey police orders. Violators can face a fine of 2,000 to 5,000 GEL or up to 60 days of administrative imprisonment.

Tbilisi Mayor Kakha Kaladze commented on the eviction, stating that the building posed a serious risk to residents.

"These evictions are being carried out from a dangerous building," Kaladze said in a video message. He also referenced past controversy over similar cases, saying, "Do you remember the accusations, insults, and attacks that recently followed the demolition of a house near Station Square?"
