German Ambassador Peter Fischer was summoned to Georgia's Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Tuesday, marking what he described as an unprecedented step in relations between the two countries.
Speaking to reporters before entering the ministry, Fischer underlined the gravity of the move. "I have been summoned by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. A summons is a form of diplomatic sanction. To be honest, this is very unusual. This is the first time in the history of modern Georgian relations with Germany that a German ambassador has been summoned to the ministry," he said.
The ambassador rejected accusations directed at Germany and other Western representatives. "I strongly reject the baseless and provocative accusations that have been made against the Federal Republic of Germany, me, and other ambassadors," Fischer stated. He added that he intended not only to listen to the government's concerns but also to voice criticism. "I will also criticize the current course of the Georgian government, which is in contradiction with joining the European Union," he said, according to a translation aired by TV Pirveli.
Georgian Dream Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze later confirmed the government's position, describing the summons as a response to what he called violations of diplomatic norms. "As for the summoning of the German ambassador, this is a diplomatic measure, a measure when the ambassador acting in Georgia grossly violates the principles of the Vienna Convention, this is how he is summoned. This is a normal diplomatic measure," Kobakhidze told journalists in Telavi.
Kobakhidze accused Fischer of going beyond his mandate. "Mr. Fischer is directly involved in the activities of the radical opposition, directly trying to put pressure on the independent judiciary," he said. Kobakhidze added that the Foreign Ministry may release further details on the matter.
