OSCE President Notes 'Lack of Dialogue' Among Georgia's Leaders
The President of the OSCE Parliamentary Assembly, Pere Joan Pons Sampietro, told journalists that a significant communication gap exists between Georgia's government and its opposition. Speaking after meetings at the Government Administration, Sampietro explained that his visit aimed to address the country's democratic state with all major political actors.
"The [OSCE] Parliamentary Assembly has been working closely with all actors in Georgia over the past 6-7 months. These are confidential, very frank conversations," Sampietro said. "What you have seen over the past two days is the result of these months of work. We managed to work with almost all opposition parties, but also with the Prime Minister, the President, the Foreign Minister, and the [Parliament] Speaker."
The OSCE leader raised specific concerns regarding political boycotts and violence. While he emphasized that the organization condemns violence in all forms, he stressed that democratic systems must protect the rights of their citizens.
"We managed to raise all the issues," Sampietro stated. "Allow me to tell you that we raised the issues of the lack of dialogue, boycott, and violence. This organization [OSCE] condemns all forms of violence, but democratic systems must also protect citizens' rights."
Despite meeting with the Prime Minister, the President, and the Speaker of the Parliament, Sampietro concluded that a fundamental lack of engagement persists.
"And we raised the issue of this lack of dialogue with the Prime Minister, the President, the Parliament Speaker, as well as with the opposition," Sampietro said. "And I must say that there is a lack of dialogue."
United National Movement Pledges Unity in New Opposition Alliance
The United National Movement (UNM) issued a statement on Facebook reaffirming its commitment to a cooperation agreement signed by Georgia's democratic parties on March 2, 2026. The party emphasized its dedication to the newly formed Opposition Alliance, stating that the group's primary goal is to challenge the current government.
Under the terms of the agreement, member parties are prohibited from making public statements that delegitimize or discredit one another. The UNM made it clear that it will strictly follow these rules to avoid internal conflict.
"The agreement also sets out the principles of relations and conduct among the parties, obliging the signatory parties to refrain from any public statements that serve to delegitimize another member party of the alliance," the statement read.
The party leadership called on its supporters to focus on strengthening the coalition rather than engaging in political infighting.
"We distance ourselves from any attacks on partner parties and call on all party members and supporters to adhere to the aforementioned agreement rules and direct all efforts toward strengthening the 'Opposition Alliance' to end Ivanishvili's dictatorial regime," the party concluded.
