Elene Khoshtaria, imprisoned leader of the opposition Droa party, has accused the Georgian Dream party of putting the country at risk by supporting Iran economically.

In a letter published on her personal social media page from prison, Khoshtaria said Georgia's actions amounted to a betrayal of the country's interests and questioned why the government would openly support Iran, which she described as an aggressive regime pursuing nuclear weapons development.

"Our Russian de facto government is helping Iran economically," Khoshtaria wrote, arguing that Russia was the force behind Georgia's policy toward Tehran.

She said the United States was treating Iran as a major foreign policy issue, particularly ahead of November's midterm elections, and referred to President Donald Trump's announcement of a new economic strategy aimed at putting pressure on Iran.

"America promises an unprecedented economic death to Iran," Khoshtaria wrote.

She argued that Georgia could face consequences if Washington imposes penalties on countries or entities supporting Iran.

"The danger is that by punishing them, we will also suffer," she wrote.

Khoshtaria said the government's policy could expose Georgia to significant risks because of its relations with Tehran.

"What, besides Russia, could force this regime to openly support a terrorist, ideological, religiously openly aggressive regime that is developing nuclear weapons?" she wrote.

"This is putting the state in great danger. This is treason," Khoshtaria said.
