South Ossetia commission convenes in the conflict zone
The second session of Tbilisi's South Ossetia status determination commission opened to the Georgian anthem in the conflict zone village of Tamarasheni on July 28. The chair of the commission, Prime Minister Zurab Noghaideli, announced that the five sub-groups of the commission-economy, finance, culture, education and justice-would be led by their respective Georgian ministers. Opposition politicians hopeful on election reform after meeting with US official
On his two-day working visit to Georgia last week, US Deputy Assistant Secretary of State Matthew Bryza kept with tradition by meeting with political opposition leaders as well as with government officials. (more)

HSBC gets banking license for Georgia
The National Bank of Georgia (NBG) issued HSBC, one of the world's largest companies, a license to start banking operations in the country. HSBC's Tbilisi branch had no trouble showing the required startup capital of USD 10 million. The head office of HSBC Bank Georgia is to be on Rustaveli Avenue, and is slated to start serving its first customers in November. (more)

Bread prices up after poor global wheat harvest
In the last week, the price of bread in the country went up 5.2 percent, according to Statistics Department data. White bread now costs GEL 0.55-0.60 instead of GEL 0.50, with other breads also costing more. (more)
Tourism figures leap past last year's
Tourists are flocking to Georgia, says the Tourism Department. The country is set to host 75 percent more visitors this year than last, with 350 000 tourists expected to visit Adjara alone. (more)

Analysts predict meat imports will rise, eclipse domestic production
